The word Columbarium is derived from the Latin term Columba, meaning "dovecote or dwelling place of a dove." In Christian tradition, the dove, of course, has long symbolized the embodiment of the Holy Spirit. It is a place of contemplation, remembrance, and prayer.
A Columbarium is a permanent structure comprised of small vaults or niches to contain cremated remains (cremains). It can be an indoor or outdoor wall, an entire building, a room, a wall along a corridor or a series of special alcoves or halls in a mausoleum, chapel or other dedicated property. A niche is a recessed compartment designed to hold urns.
A Columbarium is an extension of the church where those who have worshipped and prayed together in life now await the resurrection of the body. It provides a final resting place with special meaning for church members for whom involvement in the church was an important part of life on earth. It is considered a blessing for a Christian to dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Current or former members, current or former pastors, legal spouses of members or pastors, adopted, step, and/or birth children and grandchildren of members or pastors, and parents or step-parents of members or pastors of Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church may use the Columbarium. Interment of noneligible individuals must be approved by the Columbarium committee, exceptions granted will be limited. Please direct all questions to a member of the committee.
How Are Columbarium Niches Reserved? Columbarium Reservation and Purchase Forms are available in the church office, or from the chair of the Columbarium Committee. A Columbarium Contract is issued when completed forms and appropriate fees are returned to the church office.
Every niche will hold two urns. There are a limited number that will hold three or four depending on the size of the urns.
The cost of a niche is as follows:
Payment must be made in full at the time of the contract signing.
Niches are 10” wide x 11.5” high. Urns MUST be of non-degradable material and MUST be of a size to fit in the opening of the niche
There are 112 niches available in Phase I for purchase. Phase II added another 70 niches for a total of 182 niches. Phase II is now complete.
Niches within the Columbarium may be purchased only by those outlined under the Eligibility requirements included in the Q&A. The Columbarium Committee will maintain a chart showing each niche number and its owner. Each purchaser will fill out a Certificate of Purchase Form which will name the individuals to be interred, the information to be engraved on the plate, and which niche number has been purchased. Selections on the niche location/ number will be on a first come-first served basis.
No liability of any kind is assumed by KMLC or the Columbarium Committee for the maintenance or preservation of the cremains of any person inurned in the Columbarium or for any loss or damage to the urns. Nor is any liability of any kind assumed by KMLC for any matter of things relating to the Columbarium area, its use, or subsequent maintenance.
